Koala Red

It’s known as the Koala Wine Bottle and it’s a bit kitsch but frankly, the idea of putting some Aussie shiraz into a bottle shaped like a koala is a stroke of marketing genius – tourists are going to go for this big time.  Although, if you wanted to generate a bit of conversation at your next dinner party, this wine would do the trick.  Chilean born Alejandro Vargas, from Australian Image Glassware, created the

bottle because every time he went back home, there were only tacky touristy gifts available – fluffy koalas usually made in China .  “I decided to make something here that was unique so people would say ‘Wow, that’s from Australia .’”  The box containing the bottle says “exceptional red wine” – not so sure about that.  It’s a clean Dookie shiraz ’03 full of very ripe plum and prune notes, blueberries, spice and mocha that follow through on the palate along with a whack of ripe tannins and extract.  To make it easy to pour, hold the koala by its back.  A percentage of the sales goes towards supporting the koalas at Healesville Sanctuary.  Another good reason to buy it.
